Iliac artery endofibrosis

Iliac artery endofibrosis
Other names: External iliac artery endofibrosis (EIAE)

Iliac artery endofibrosis (IAE) is a type of endofibrosis (thickening of the inside) of the external iliac artery.[1] Symptoms may include pain or weakness of the leg with heavy exercise.[1] Complications may include acute limb ischemia.[1]

Risk factors include sports that involve repeated movement of the hips such as cycling.[1] Diagnosis may be supported by a decrease in the ankle brachial index to less than 0.66 after exercise and confirmed by ultrasound, CT angiogram, or a MR angiogram.[1]

Treatment may involve stopping the sport that is causing the issue.[1] Angioplasty and vascular stenting do not appear useful.[1]
