Desoximetasone, sold under a number of brand names, is a medication used to treat various skin conditions including dermatitis and psoriasis.[1] It is applied to the skin, twice per day.[1]

Relatively common side effects include burning, increased hair growth, skin breakdown, acne, infection, skin atrophy, and striae.[1] Other side effects may include Cushing's syndrome.[1] Safety in pregnancy is unclear.[1] It is a corticosteroids.[1]

Desoximetasone was approved for medical use in the United States in 1977.[1] It is available as a generic medication.[2] In the United States a tube of 60 grams costs about 35 USD as of 2021.[2]

Medical uses

When using desoximetasone, some of the medication may be absorbed through the skin and into the bloodstream. Too much absorption can lead to unwanted side effects elsewhere in the body. Large amounts of desoximetasone should be avoided over large areas. It should not be used for extended periods of time. Treated areas should not be covered with airtight dressings such as plastic wrap or adhesive bandages.[3] Children may absorb more medication than adults do. Desoximetasone is for use only on the skin and should be kept out of the eyes.

Desoximetasone can also be used to treat some types of psoriasis.
