Banyan Tree Holdings Limited (also known as Banyan Tree Group) is a Singaporean multinational hospitality brand that manages and develops resorts, hotels and spas in Asia, America, Africa and the Middle East. The brand was established in 1994.[2] As of July 2023, the company operates 70 resorts and hotels. Under its management are also 63 spas, 64 retail galleries, and three championship golf courses in 23 countries.

History

Banyan Tree started when founder Ho Kwon Ping and his wife Claire Chiang came across a plot of land while they were on holiday in Bang Tao Bay, on the western coast of Phuket in the Andaman Sea, and thought it would make an ideal location for a resort. They purchased the land and then discovered that it was an abandoned tin mine and too polluted to support vegetation or any developments. They embarked on a regeneration programme, reintroducing indigenous plants and building 7,000 trees. Ten years later in 1994, the first resort Banyan Tree Phuket was built.

In 2009, Banyan Tree Global Foundation was created as part of Banyan Tree Holdings Limited. The foundation serves as the corporate social responsibility (CSR) arm of the group and works to enhance social, environmental and economic well-being.[3] Projects under the foundation includes Greening Communities,[4] Seedlings,[5] and Earth Day.

In December 2016, Banyan Tree entered into a partnership with a French hospitality company Accor. As part of the deal, Accor would invest €16 million to Banyan Tree in exchange for a 5% stake in the company, with an option to purchase an additional 5% stake.[1]

In May 2019, Banyan Tree announced its first resort in Singapore on a 4.6 hectares (11 acres) site in Mandai.[6]

Brands

Banyan Tree currently markets its properties under 10 brands:[7][8]

  • Banyan Tree: The company's signature luxury all-villa hotels that pioneered pool villas and tropical garden spas, launched in 1994 with Banyan Tree Phuket.
  • Angsana: Upscale hotels offering spacious rooms for families and expansive meeting facilities, launched in 2000 with the now-closed Angsana Bintan.
  • Laguna: Integrated resort developments grouping together two or more of the company's other properties in Bintan, Lăng Cô, and Phuket.
  • Cassia: Serviced apartments targeting travelers looking for affordable holiday homes, launched in 2015 with Cassia Phuket.
  • Dhawa: Design-based upscale hotels showcasing distinctive features of their locales, launched in 2016 with Dhawa Cayo Santa Maria.
  • Garrya: Upscale hotels with minimalist designs located in remote neighborhoods, launched in 2021 with Garrya Huzhou Lucun.
  • Homm: Midscale hotels providing home-on-the-go accommodations, launched in 2021 with Homm Bliss Southbeach Patong.
  • Banyan Tree Escape: Luxury boutique hotels espousing the concept of "no doors, no walls" (all rooms are open to the outside), launched in 2022 with Buahan, a Banyan Tree Escape.
  • Banyan Tree Veya: Wellness-focusing retreats, launched in 2022 with Banyan Tree Veya Phuket.
  • Folio: Compact budget-friendly city hotels, launched in 2023 with Folio Sakura Shinsaibashi Osaka.
