Copper City is an archaic place name in Glenn County, California[1] located in the Mendocino National Forest. It lies at an elevation of 5837 feet (1779 m).[1] Copper ore was discovered along mountain creeks in this area during the 1860s, creating an influx of miners with "Copper Fever" to this remote site in the eastern Coastal Mountain Range. The mining community dissipated nearly as quickly as it sprung up, and nothing remains of it today other than the place name.[2] Per an index made 1888, the California State Mineral Cabinet of the E.B. Crocker Art Gallery holds native copper and cuprite from Copper Hill in Colusa County, as well as several other copper-family minerals said to come from Colusa County.[3] Copper City still appeared on maps of Glenn County as of 1939.[4]
