History

Before the American Civil War, the area was initially populated, and the enormous antebellum Tullos Plantation existed nearby. The J. I. Cameron Lumber Company constructed a sawmill in the region in the late 1870s or early 1880s, and by 1886 a town with 100 residents had grown there. In honor of a local family, a post office was created in 1887 and given the name Bissell. After arriving in the area in the late 1890s, pioneers from Illinois and Missouri nicknamed the town Glendale in honor of the region's undulating hills. The Glendale Orchard Company was established by the newcomers, who bought over 1,000 acres (400 ha) and grew peaches and other fruits there. Glendale saw a boom in the late 1890s, fueled by the lumber and fruit industries, and it is estimated that the town's population increased to 1,200 by 1899. By 1898, several churches, a two-story hotel, and the Glendale Star newspaper had all been established. However, the local lumber industry started to deteriorate after 1900, and many people and businesses left Glendale. In 1905, the newspaper relocated to Trinity, but by 1914, just 75 people remained in the town. Glendale had two enterprises and 120 residents in the mid-1930s. During the 1950s and 1960s, its population stayed roughly at that level, but by 1990, the town had 78 residents. The population was 175 in 2000.[2]
