History
Kalmiuske was founded in 1933 as the village of Karakubbud (Ukrainian: Каракуббуд; Russian: Каракубстрой) in connection with the construction of limestone mines. The village was renamed Komsomolske in 1949, and was granted city status in 1956.[1][2]
In 1971, the population was 15,800 people, flux limestone was mined here. Also, food industry enterprises and an industrial technical school were here[1]
In January 1989, the population of the city was 14,112 people, the basis of the economy was limestone mining[2]
In 1997, the vocational school No. 68 located in the city was merged with vocational school No. 79.[3]
In January 2013, the population of the city was 11,763 people.[4]
Starting in mid-April 2014, pro-Russian separatists captured several towns in Donetsk Oblast,[5][6] including Kalmiuske.[7] On 29 August 2014, Ukrainian forces reportedly secured the city from the separatists.[7] However, on 31 August, it was recaptured by the separatists.[8]
In May 2016, the Verkhovna Rada renamed the city from Komsomolske to Kalmiuske after the Kalmius River flowing through the city under decommunization laws. However, the Ukrainian government does not control the city, and the new name is not recognized by the pro-Russian occupation authorities.
In July 2020, as part of the reform of administrative divisions of Ukraine, Kalmiuske was made the administrative center of Kalmiuske Raion. These new statuses are not recognized by the pro-Russian occupation authorities.
Currently, the population is estimated as 11,422 (2022 estimate)[9].
