History

On 14 April 2014 pro-Russian activists captured Kirovske's town hall and declared that the city was part of the separatist Donetsk People's Republic (DPR).[2] Since then the city has remained under DPR and Russian occupation.[3][4]

On 12 May 2016, the Ukrainian parliament renamed the city Kirovske back to Khrestivka (its historic name) under decommunization laws. The DPR and Russian occupying forces do not recognize the name change.

According to the old Ukrainian subdivisions, which are used by occupational authorities, Kirovske is a city of regional significance and does not belong to any raion.

In Ukraine, the administrative divisions were changed on 18 July 2020, and the reform reduced the number of raions of Donetsk Oblast to eight. The city of Kirovske was merged into newly established Horlivka Raion.[5][6] The area of Horlivka raion is not controlled by Ukrainian authorities, and thus the divisions are yet to be implemented.
