In the Iris Oifigiúil of October 2008, the registrar of political parties indicated an intention to "approve the application for registration" for the party "to contest a Local Election only".[2] Following his resignation from the Green Party in late 2008, one local councillor reportedly called for voters to back the party in upcoming 2009 local elections.[3] The party's only candidate in that election, Tom Crossan, received 417 first preference votes and was elected to Letterkenny Town Council.[4] In late June 2009, Crossan and a number of independent councillors reportedly entered a "power-sharing pact" with the council's Sinn Féin and Fine Gael representatives.[5]

In the 2014 local elections, Crossan received 428 votes and was not elected to Donegal County Council.[6] As of September 2014, the Letterkenny Residents Party was included on the register of political parties.[7] It was not included in the February 2015 register.[8]
