History
The intent to construct the temple was announced by church president Thomas S. Monson on April 3, 2016, during the Sunday morning session of the church's general conference.[5][6] The Quito Ecuador, Belém Brazil, and Harare Zimbabwe temples were announced at the same time. The church later announced the second temple in Lima would be named the Lima Peru Los Olivos Temple.[5] When dedicated, it will be the fourth operating temple in Peru, with five additional announced temples in the planning and design phase.[7] Once the Lima Peru Los Olivos Temple is dedicated, Lima will be the first city outside the United States to have two operating temples in the same city. Lima will be the third city in the world to contain two temples in the same city, behind the Utah cities of South Jordan and Provo.[8]
As of December 31, 2022, the church has reported there are approximately 630,099 members in Peru.[9] On March 7, 2019, the church announced a groundbreaking, to signify beginning of construction, would be held on June 8, 2019, with Enrique R. Falabella, president of the church's South America Northwest Area, presiding.[2][3]
With construction of the temple completed in 2023, a public open house will be conducted from November 10 to December 9, 2023, and the temple will be dedicated on January 14, 2024, by D. Todd Christofferson of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles.[10]
