History

Saatchi Art was originally known as Saatchi Online and was owned by Charles Saatchi.[7]

In August 2014, Saatchi Art was acquired by Demand Media, Inc. (now Leaf Group).[8] In 2021, Graham Holdings Company acquired Leaf Group LTD.[5]

Rebecca Wilson is Saatchi Art’s Chief Curator and VIP, Art Advisory and has been with the company since its inception. She was formerly a Director at the Saatchi Gallery, London, where she was instrumental in the launch of the gallery’s online presence. [9]

In 2018 Saatchi Art debuted its hospitality art advisory services, offering complimentary and comprehensive art programming for hotels, restaurants, residential and healthcare. The senior hospitality art advisory team has curated artwork for Four Seasons, Nobu Hotels, 1 Hotels, Waldorf Astoria, The Ritz Carlton, St. Regis, and many more notable brands.

Controversies

Reports suggest that Demand Media possibly violated an intellectual property contract by adopting the name Saatchi Art.[10]

In November 2014-2015 Charles Saatchi, the owner of Saatchi Gallery, initiated multiple legal actions in the United Kingdom's Chancery Division of High Court of Justice against the current owners of Saatchi Art. Saatchi's contention arose from an alleged breach of an Intellectual Property agreement dated February 18, 2010, prompting him to ask the company to cease using the "Saatchi Art" name and to compensate him for profits made from the name since the alleged breach. Concerns were raised that the low average transaction price on Saatchi Art might dilute the Saatchi brand's association with the high-end art market. Separate legal challenges also involved allegations against Demand Media for breach of trust in relation to Charles Saatchi and Robert Norton. [11][12][10]
