Acanthiops Waltz, R.D. & McCafferty, 1987.

Etymology: Masculine. Greek: akanthos - thorn, iops - small fish; an allusion to this genus being a tuberculate or spiny minnow-like mayfly.

Type species: Centroptilum marlieri (Demoulin 1967)
