Type locality: Rapa, south side of Mei Point, rocky shore to 3 m depth.

Etymology: This species is named caudicinctus from the Latin cauda for tail and cinctum for girdle or belt, in reference to the broad blackish bar across the posterior caudal peduncle and base of caudal fin, its most diagnostic color marking.
