Type locality: Malaysia: Terengganu, Sekayu waterfalls (04°57'49.7"N 102°57'14.0"E ), near swampy stream.

Etymology: From the Latin stigmosus, meaning full of marks, pertaining to the patterned opercle and barred pattern on dorsal, caudal and anal fins of both male and female specimens.
