Type locality: Guyana, East Berbice River, Just upstream of Kwakwani, 5°14’57.8”N, 58°5’11.5”W .

Etymology: The specific epithet is from the Latin petitus (= reaching out for, or inclining towards). In reference to the lateral band spots lying adjacent to the upper lateral line anteriorly and intercepting posteriorly.
