Type locality: Cambodia, Mekong basin, O Kap at ford on Highway 197, 7 km S of Sasane River, trib. of Mekong River, 13.872N, 107.297E, W.

Etymology: From the Latin noun canicula, meaning little dog, in reference to the canine-like-molar shape of the dark dorsal saddles.
