Holotype: MNKhNU R295. Paratype: MNKhNU R296.
Type locality: Ross Sea, 72°51.9'S, 176°34.9'E, depth 1,015 m.
Etymology: The species is named after the Spanish longliner Tronio. A representative collection of fishes belonging to the genus Pogonophryne was gathered on board this fishery vessel during the Antarctic summer season of 2009–2010 in the Ross and Amundsen Sea by the first co-author.
