Synodontis caudalis Boulenger 1899: 44.
Lectotype: MRAC 57. Paralectotypes: BMNH 1899.2.20.19-20, (2); MRAC 20, (1).
Type locality: Zaire [Democratic Republic of Congo]. Boma, Matadi, Kinshasa [Leopoldville].
Etymology: Species name caudalis from Latin cauda refers to the striking elongated filaments of the caudal fin in this species.
