Name

  • Synodontis nigriventris David, 1936

Lectotype: MRAC 30312. Paralectotypes (69): MRAC 16689-90 (2), 17517-18 (2), 17587-88 (2), 18014-15 (2), 26911-12 (2), 29529-30 (2), 29542 (1) 30117 (1), 30314 (1), 31167 (1), 31297-310 (14), 42861-69 (9), 41926-31 (6), 43887-90 (4), 44138-57 (20); MNHN 1886-429 (1).

Type locality: Democratic Republic of Congo, Buta.

Etymology: The species epithet is a compound of the Latin nigri (= to be black in color, the intransitive of nigra = black), and ventris (genitive singular of venter = belly), an allution to the dark belly of the species. While most other catfish have a light colored belly, developed this species a dark one, since they normally swim upside down.
