Etymology

Recorded in Old French as estoper, estuper. From Vulgar Latin *stuppāre, from Latin stuppa. Equivalent to étoupe + -er. Compare Occitan estopar, Italian stoppare, Old Spanish estopar; cf. also Romanian astupa, Romansh stuppar, Venetian stupar, Sicilian stuppari.
