Etymology 1
From Proto-Finno-Ugric *wilä- (“to kill”). Cognates include Northern Mansi али (ali, al-) and Komi-Zyrian вины (viny).[1] Possibly also related to the Turkic root reflected in e.g. Turkish öl- (“to die”).[2]

From Old Swedish öl, from Old Norse ǫl (“ale, beer”), from Proto-Germanic *alu, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂elut- (“beer”), or *h₂elu- (“bitter”). Cognate with Icelandic öl. Probably related to Latin alūmen (“alum”); the meaning of "feast" comes from the custom of beer being served at feasts.
