From Proto-Germanic *þuljaną, from Proto-Indo-European *telh₂-. Cognate with Old Saxon tholian, Old High German dolēn, Old Norse þola (Swedish tåla), Gothic 𐌸𐌿𐌻𐌰𐌽 (þulan); compare Latin tuli, tolerare (“tolerate”), tollere (“lift up, bear”), Ancient Greek τλῆναι (tlênai).
