From Proto-Vietic *dam ~ *tam, from Proto-Mon-Khmer *st₁am ~ *st₁uum (“right hand”); cognate with Muong tăm, Pacoh atâm, Khmer ស្ដាំ (sdam), Mang /tam⁴/ and Old Mon stūm.
