From Phoenician 𐤒𐤓𐤕𐤇𐤃𐤔𐤕 (Qrt-ḥdšt, “New City”), hence doublet of Καρχηδών (Karkhēdṓn, “Carthage”). Probably also influenced by χαλκός (khalkós, “bronze”).
