Etymology

From Byzantine Greek γκρινιάζω, γρινιάζω. Either from γκρίνια (gkrínia, moaning, complaining) + -άζω (-ázo) (but possibly vice versa, a back-formation of γκρίνια from the verb). Or from dialectal Italian grignare ("grind teeth") -contemporary Italian digrignare-, from the Frankish*grīnan (to grin). Also, possible influence from the mediaeval synonym γρυνίζω (grunízō), associated to the ancient γρυλίζω (grulízō, grunt).[1][2]
