From Proto-Indo-European *leyp- (“fat substance”). Stem λῐπ-, λῐπο-, λῐπᾰρ- (sense: “fat”). Different from λῐπ- (sense: “wanting”) of aorist ἔλῐπον (élipon) of verb λείπω (leípō, “leave; lack”). Different from λῑπᾰρ- from λίπτω (líptō, “desire”).
