ποταμός
Ancient Greek
Etymology
Uncertain. Most commonly explained as related to πῑ́πτω (pī́ptō, “to fall”). Could also relate to πετάννῡμι (petánnūmi, “to expand”), which would make it identical to Proto-Germanic *faþmaz (“embrace”) (English fathom).
