From Proto-Indo-European *sploiǵh₂ḗn. Cognate with Old Irish selg, Lithuanian blužnis, Latin lien, Old Armenian փայծաղն (pʿaycałn), Avestan 𐬯𐬞𐬆𐬭𐬆𐬰𐬀𐬥 (spərəzan), and Sanskrit प्लीहन् m (plīhán).
