τράπεζα
Ancient Greek
Alternative forms
- τρᾰ́πεσδᾰ (trápesda) – Doric
Etymology
From Proto-Indo-European *tr̥-ped-ih₂- (“having three feet”), from *tr̥- (“three”, combining form) + *pṓds (“foot”). The first element is conventionally made *kʷtur- (“four”, combining form), but Sihler (1995) points out that early tables had three legs, not four. Cognate with Mycenaean Greek 𐀵𐀟𐀼 (to-pe-za).
