From Proto-Slavic *gordъ, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *gardas, from Proto-Indo-European *gʰordʰos, from base Proto-Indo-European *gʰerdʰ- (“to enclose, to grasp”), either directly or possibly via Proto-Germanic *gardaz, whence English yard. Cognate with Dutch gaard, gaarde. Doublet of град (grad), a borrowing from Old Church Slavonic.
