сверстник
Russian
Etymology
Inherited from Old East Slavic съвьрстьникъ (sŭvĭrstĭnikŭ). Compare Old East Slavic съвьрстьнъ (sŭvĭrstĭnŭ, “of the same age”), съвьрсть (sŭvĭrstĭ, “of the same age; coeval, age-mate”), from вьрста (vĭrsta, “age”). Compare Slovene vȓst (“row, type, age”) (tonal orthography) (genitive vrstȋ (tonal orthography)), Sanskrit वृत्ति f (vṛttí, “method, essence, nature, gender”). Morphologically с- (s-) + верста́ (verstá) + -ник (-nik).
