Etymology

From Proto-Slavic *sku(b)ti. Cognate with Serbo-Croatian скупти/skupti, Slovene oskubiti (pluck), Russian скубу (skubu) (infinitives: скубить (skubitʹ), скубти (skubti), скусть (skustʹ), скубсти (skubsti)) Ukrainian ску́бти (skúbty). Non-Slavic cognates include Gothic 𐌰𐍆𐍃𐌺𐌹𐌿𐌱𐌰𐌽 (afskiuban), Old Norse skúfa and skýfa (to push, shove), German schieben, Persian آشفتن (âšoftan, to agitate), Sanskrit क्षुभ्यति (kṣubhyati, to shake, be agitated). Compare Slovak and Czech chyba.
