From Old East Slavic съвѣтъ (sŭvětŭ), borrowed from Old Church Slavonic съвѣтъ (sŭvětŭ, “advice”), compounded from со- (so-) + вѣтъ (větŭ, “agreement”), from Proto-Slavic *větъ (“council, talk”). Probably cognate with Polish witać (“to welcome”).
