Etymology 1
From Proto-Iranian *hwarta-, from *hwar- (“to eat, consume”). Cognates include Persian خوردن (xordan, “to eat, drink”), Pashto خوړل (khwaṟël, “to eat”) and Avestan 𐬓𐬀𐬭𐬀𐬌𐬙𐬌 (xᵛaraiti, “to consume, eat”). Compare хӕлц (xælc, “provisions”), from Proto-Iranian *hwarti-.
