From Proto-Iranian *hwarta-, from *hwar- (to eat, consume). Cognates include Persian خوردن (xordan, to eat, drink), Pashto خوړل (khwaṟël, to eat) and Avestan 𐬓𐬀𐬭𐬀𐬌𐬙𐬌 (xᵛaraiti, to consume, eat). Compare хӕлц (xælc, provisions), from Proto-Iranian *hwarti-.
