Etymology

From *արշալուրջ (*aršalurǰ). The second part is լուրջ (lurǰ, “half-dark”). The first part is probably an Iranian borrowing; compare Avestan 𐬀𐬎𐬭𐬎𐬱𐬀‎ (auruša, “white”), Sanskrit अरुष (aruṣá, “reddish, light red, glowing, fire-coloured”) and Old Armenian loanword Արուսեակ (Aruseak). Alternatively, the first part is from արջն (arǰn, “black; dark”). The forms ending in -լոյս (-loys) were modified folk-etymologically under the influence of լոյս (loys).

Usage notes

Classically always used in the plural, արշալուրշք (aršalurškʿ), and with the preposition ընդ (ənd). Usually undeclined, but the following form are attested: աչալրջացն (ačʿalrǰacʿn), աչալրջոցն (ačʿalrǰocʿn), աշալրջոցն (ašalrǰocʿn), աջալրջոցն (aǰalrǰocʿn), աջալջուցն (aǰalǰucʿn).
