կախ

Armenian

Etymology

From Old Armenian կախ (kax).

Pronunciation

  • (Eastern Armenian, standard) IPA(key): [kɑχ]
  • (file)

Adjective

կախ (kax) (superlative ամենակախ)

  1. hanging, dangling, pendent; hung up, suspended

Declension

Old Armenian

Etymology

The origin is uncertain. Ačaṙyan and J̌ahukyan reject all attempts of connecting the word with the descendants of Proto-Indo-European *ḱenk- (to hang), whence English hang. According to J̌ahukyan, an Iranian origin "is not impossible", if the word is connected with Shughni ках̌у̊н (kax̌ū̊n).

Adjective

ի կախ ունելi kax unelto suspend, to hold in suspense
ի կախ մնալi kax mnalto remain in suspense

Usage notes

Used only in the form ի կախ (i kax).
