Progressive assimilation of earlier *מִן אַיִן (*min ʾáyin). Compare מֵאַיִן (mēʾáyin), with the more usual regressive assimilation (followed by degemination and compensatory lengthening). Cognate with Arabic مِنْ أَيْنَ (min ʾayna).
