From Middle Persian [script needed] (ʾbwrs /aburs/, “juniper”). Ultimately of Semitic origin, found with consonant correspondence as if descended from Proto-Semitic in Akkadian 𒇷 (burāšu, “cypress”), Hebrew בְּרוֹשׁ (bərṓš, “cypress”), Aramaic בְּרֹותָא / ܒܪܽܘܬܳܐ (bərōṯā, “cypress”). A prothetic variant is also encountered in Aramaic אברותא.
