Etymology 1
Disputed etymology:
- From Arabic كُرَة (kura, “a ball, a mass, a clump; tuber or bulb”), in reference to the shape of its corm; being the source of Spanish cará (“taro”) and Portuguese cará (“yam”).
- From Portuguese cará:
- Borrowed from a language from the coast of Guinea.
- Derived from Late Latin or Vulgar Latin cara, borrowed from Ancient Greek κᾰ́ρᾱ (kárā, “head”), from Proto-Indo-European *ḱr̥h₂-(e)s-n-; also in reference to the shape of its corm.
Alternative forms
- كَرِير (kerīr)
