Like Middle Persian [script needed] (mzgt' /mazgit/), Classical Persian مزگت‎ (mazgit), Classical Syriac ܡܰܣܓܕܳܐ‎ (masgḏā), Nabataean Aramaic 𐢓𐢖𐢄𐢅𐢀‎, Hebrew מסגד‎ (misgád), from Arabic مَسْجِد‎ (masjid), an Arabic formation from the Aramaic-borrowed سَجَدَ‎ (sajada, “to bow down”).
