Like Middle Persian [script needed] (mzgt' /mazgit/), Classical Persian مزگت (mazgit), Classical Syriac ܡܰܣܓܕܳܐ (masgḏā), Nabataean Aramaic 𐢓𐢖𐢄𐢅𐢀, Hebrew מסגד (misgád), from Arabic مَسْجِد (masjid), an Arabic formation from the Aramaic-borrowed سَجَدَ (sajada, to bow down).
