From Middle Persian 𐭬𐭩𐭱 (mēš), from Proto-Iranian *mayšáh, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *mayšás, from Proto-Indo-European *móysos (“sheep, skin of sheep”). Cognate with Sanskrit मेष (meṣá) and Avestan 𐬨𐬀𐬉𐬱𐬀 (maēša).
