From Proto-Iranian *haĵahram, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *saȷ́ʰásram, from Proto-Indo-European *sm̥-ǵʰéslom. Indo-Iranian cognates include Pashto زر (zër), Persian هزار (hezâr), Kurdish ههزار (hazār) and Sanskrit सहस्र (sa-hásra). Akin to Old Armenian հազար (hazar), an Iranian borrowing.
