From Proto-Semitic *ʾiṣbaʿ-, compare Jewish Aramaic אֶצְבְּעָא (ʾeṣbəʿā), Arabic إِصْبَع (ʾiṣbaʿ), Hebrew אֶצְבַּע (ʾeṣbaʿ), Egyptian ḏbꜥ.

Etymology 2
From the root ܨ-ܒ-ܥ (ṣ-b-ʿ) related to dyeing, and the verb ܨܒܥ (ṣbaʿ, “to dip, to immerse; to dye”) from Proto-Semitic *ṣabaġ-. Compare Arabic صِبْغ (ṣibḡ) and Hebrew צֶבַע (ṣéḇaʿ).
