Etymology
From Proto-Indo-Aryan *HiHsáH, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *HiHsáH, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂iHséh₂ (“shaft”). Cognate with Ancient Greek οἴαξ (oíax, “handle of rudder, tiller, helm;”), οἰήϊον (oiḗïon, “handle of rudder”), Hittite 𒄭𒅖𒊭𒀭 (ḫi-iš-ša- /ḫišša-/, “carriage pole”), Old English ār (whence English oar). Compare also Finnish aisa (“shaft; pole”), borrowed from Baltic, whence borrowed from the Slavic s-stem (compare Slovene ojẹ̑ (“thill”), genitive ojẹ̑sa).
