From Proto-Indo-Aryan *ȷ́átu, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ǰátu, from Proto-Indo-European *gʷétu (“resin, gum”). Cognate with Persian ژد (žad, “gum”), Scottish Gaelic bìth, Gaulish *bitu (whence Latin bitumen), Old English cwidu (whence English cud).
