From Proto-Indo-Aryan *pr̥ṣṭʰás, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *pr̥štʰás (“back”), from Proto-Indo-European *pr̥-sth₂-ós. Cognate with Avestan 𐬞𐬀𐬭𐬱𐬙𐬀 (paršta), Persian پشت (pošt).
