From Proto-Indo-Aryan *matíṣ, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *matíš, from Proto-Indo-European *mn̥tís, oblique stem of *méntis (“thought”). Cognate with Latin mēns, Ancient Greek αὐτόματος (autómatos), Old English ġemynd (whence English mind).
