From Proto-Indo-Aryan *wálśas, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *wálĉas, from Proto-Indo-European *wólḱ-o-s, from *wel- (“hair; wool”). Cognate with Avestan 𐬬𐬀𐬭𐬆𐬯𐬀 (varəsa, “hair (on the head)”), Proto-Slavic *volsъ (“hair”), Old Persian [script needed] (vars), Persian گرس (gurs, “curled hair”), Lithuanian valaĩ.
