From Old Marathi 𑘭𑘻𑘡𑘹𑘽 (soneṁ), from Sanskrit सौवर्ण (saúvarṇa), from सुवर्ण (suvárṇa). Cognate with Gujarati સોનું (sonũ), Hindi सोना (sonā).
