Etymology
From Proto-Indo-Aryan *sáynaH, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *sáynaH. Cognate with Avestan 𐬵𐬀𐬉𐬥𐬁 (haēnā, “hostile army”), Old Persian 𐏃𐎡𐎴𐎠 (hainā, “hostile army”).
According to native grammarians, the sense "missile" is from the root सि (√si, “to hurl, cast”). Compare सायक (sā́yaka).
