From Sanskrit दीर्घ (dīrgha), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *drHgʰa-, from Proto-Indo-European *dl̥h₁gʰós (“long”). Cognate with Old Persian 𐎭𐎼𐎥 (darga), Avestan 𐬛𐬀𐬭𐬆𐬔𐬀 (darǝga-, “long”), Latin longus, Old Church Slavonic дльгъ (dlĭgŭ).
